In spring 2023, I began working on a new book, which I called A Selfless Art. For reasons both political and personal I felt that there was more to say that I had managed in A Restless Art – and different things to say too. But my difficulties were still far from over and my thinking far from clear. I wrote a lot and read more, but made no progress I wanted to share. A couple of times I started a website as a home for the new project, only to close it down a few weeks later.
Now I’m starting again, not because I’ve solved the problems, but because I haven’t. All that I’ve not been able to resolve remains but my way through difficulties has always been through language. So that is what I shall do. I have long practiced a kind of ‘thinking in public’, partly to demystify what writers and artists do. So I’ll pick myself up and start over, conscious that another fall might be just around the corner.
This site will stay up as a resource about community and participatory art, but I will only post here when there’s some relevant news to share. From now on my work will be here:
